Creating an Anime template in photoshop - An original tutorial by Richard Isbell

In the following pages I am going to detail exactly how to make your own web page template. This is going to be an in-depth tutorial, so don't try to finish it in one session. Have a break now and again to let the information sink in.

Step 1

O.k, here goes. Open photoshop and press CRTL+N to open a new document (throughout this tutorial I will use keyboard shortcuts as much as possible. The more you learn the faster you'll get jobs done).

Step 2

Let's start on the background first. Click Edit->Fill. Here's the screen that pops up:

Step 3

If we click the drop down menu next to 'Use' we see several options. For this background i want to use a pattern, so click the word 'pattern' from the list. Now we get a new option: Custom pattern. Click the drop down menu and then the small triangle:

Step 4

There are lots of presets to use. I am looking for one that can be found in the 'Artists Surfaces'. So I click that and when photoshop asks me if I want to replace the current patterns I click 'yes'.

Step 5

I rather like the 'Gauze' pattern so I'll use that. Please take a minute or two to try out different patterns. After clicking OK, this is what you get:

Step 6

As you can see, it fills the entire canvas. But let's go a bit further and change the color. Press CRTL+ U to bring up the Hue/Saturation dialogue. I'm looking for a nice blue, so I enter these values:

Notice that you have to have the 'colorize' checked.

Step 7

One more thing before we continue. It's always a good idea to rename our layers, especially as we are going to create lots of them. Just click the word to the right of the layer and type any meaningful word:

Step 8

Now for the header image. We are going to use a simple but very effective technique here. First we need a new layer. Click the 'New layer' icon at the bottom of the layers panel. Now press U on the keyboard. This activates the rounded rectangle tool. Now click and drag at the top of the image:
